Cauldron Candy

Project Summary

This was a pure "passion project" to up-level the Halloween trick-or-treating experience for neighborhood kids! After years of disappearing porch candy bowls, I decided to lean in.

Trick-or-treaters approached the touch screen and were presented with a choice between "Trick" or "Treat". Choosing "Trick" would activate one of the custom "events" nearby: a self-opening spell book or preserved creatures in jars being re-animated. With the exception of some stock graphics, voice talent and some initial fabrication, all hardware, software, electronics and fabrication were done by myself. Much of the mechanical and cosmetic fabrication was designed in Fusion 360 then 3D printed. Check out this imgur album for a few images/videos of the build process.

Involvement & Achievements

  • Concepted, designed and built all components of the experience (with exception of a few props and stock design/art) to include 3d modeling & printing, fabrication, software, and electronics.
  • A mobile web app controls all administrative functions of the experience, including restocking, setting % chance of multiple candy bars, disabling malfunctioning components or triggering manual actions from the machine.
